I love entering Susanna Leonard Hill's clever holiday contests. It's always a challenge for me to create an engaging and compelling story with such limited wordcount. I've stayed away from the Halloweensie contest because the 100 WC limit scares me (pun intended), but this year I got a surge of inspiration and went for it.
**Note this year's Halloweensie contest required 3 words to be in the story: Goblin, Chill, and Tiptoe.
I hope you enjoy THE GOBLIN GROOVE!
GOBLIN GROOVE by Katie Brandyberry (100 WC)
On Halloween you find a door
leading to an old dance floor.
Daringly, you sneak inside.
Your stomach swirls. Your eyes grow wide…
as creepy creatures start to dance.
Monsters mash and Pumpkins prance.
Then Goblins enter doing flips.
Watching you, they lick their lips.
Stomping left, sidestepping right,
they open wide—prepared to bite.
Humans make the perfect treat
for Goblins grooving to the beat!
Ideas form. A plan takes shape:
there’s only one way to escape.
Stomping left, sidestepping right,
you join their chilling dance tonight…
until you’ve grooved across the floor
and bravely tiptoe out that door.
